Hello family and friends of 008!
February and winter are finally here!!! What crazy weather we have had lately! Although the kiddos have had another mini-winter break, we are finally getting back into our routines and continue having lots of fun! In the words of Maxy, "Work, work, work, play, eat, work and home!" But do not fret we have lots of fun in between and during those work times! :)
Before I dive into our academics I want to give our thanks first!
We need to say a HUGE thank you to the Minier family for picking up our tab on our community outing today at Big Bricks Restaurant! I think this was one of the best field trips ever for the kids and the staff! Please check out the pictures and she the sheer joy on their faces while being at a restaurant all together as a class but also with all that food! We cannot thank you enough for your generosity!
ANOTHER HUGE thank you to the Atkins family for their generous donations! We were able to tip our kind waiters/waitresses as well as have some extra money to spend on our next community outing!
BIG thanks to the ALL the other families who have donated money, supplies and time to keep 008 running strong! We could not do it without you all! Every little bit counts and goes such a long way.
And lastly, THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU to the paraprofessionals in 008 and the kiddos who braved this cold day to make Ms. Johnson's crazy community trips come to life! I know I picked the worst season-weather-wise- but I am SO happy we get to share these experiences together! The kids are SO excited and are LOVING going out together as a class on field trips! I am LOVING their faces when they get to go out into our community and interact with the community members!
Alright, alright enough gushing! Here we go into our academic updates!
Social Studies- Still working on identifying the community helpers and now also the places they work at/in. We have been doing daily quizzes to keep reviewing the helpers and now we actually get to see them out in the community! We will keep reviewing them as well as places in our community and now community signs!
Science- We have just wrapped up our Penguin unit! Over the last several weeks we have created penguin diagrams, posters and so much more! They have learned 5 features of the penguins, where they live, what they eat and like to do! We loved working on these cute animals and waddling around the room like penguins! Now we are onto our next unit of the five senses!
Math- We are wrapping up our Touch Point Math Addition curriculum. We are continuing to practice putting our touch points on our numbers, especially 6-9! In a couple more weeks we will be starting basic subtraction. Along with that we are (slowly) introducing a money unit in every couple weeks to gain exposure to this math concept!
Reading/Writing- We are continuing to read short stories to work on our reading fluency, read stories and texts together to work on comprehension, practice and learn our sight words to help with our reading and also continue to work on daily handwriting/ sentence building assignments.
Speech- Our Core Word of the Week is going strong with our wonderful leader and speech Pathologist Ms. Tanya! Please look at the calendar to see what words we are reviewing each week to practice these words at home!
That about sums up what is going on in 008! I hope you all are staying warm! Thank you again for all your love, support, generosity and patience! Thank you for entrusting us with your children and giving us the gift of working with them every day! They truly are unique, special and hilarious!
Hello family & friends of 008!
We have had so much going on in our classroom these last two weeks that I have barely had time to write to you all!
Before I rewind I just want to make sure you are all aware that TOMORROW- January 30th-schools will be closed due to extreme temperatures. They will announce tomorrow at noon whether or not they will be closed on Thursday as well! And then don't forget...no school on Friday for a Teacher Professional Development day. Those lucky kids are having another mini- break!
Rewinding back to previous weeks, we have been SO busy between our Special Olympics Basketball Competition, community trip to the dentist, peer buddy social and Oliver's Citizen Day!
So that is just a snippet of all the extra things we have been doing on top of our already busy days! We are continuing to put in a lot of work on our academic subjects! Here is a quick recap of what we are working on!
My "short" snippet has been pretty long, I apologize! There is just so much going on in 008! If you ever have any questions or concerns please feel free to email me or set up a time to come in an we can talk face to face (even better!!)!
Hope you all stay warm this week and have a great long weekend with your kiddos!
Thank you again for all your patience, support, donations, supplies and time!
Well we made it! Our first week back post Holiday break and man o man were we busy! The kids were happy to be back among their friends and teachers! They greeted each other with hugs, smiles, high-fives and lots of giggles!
We jumped right back into school mode which made the days seem longer than they were but we made it through! A short side story- one of my favorite things about this class is their memory and how they pick up on what you say! One of our students loves to repeat Ms. Johnson's silly sayings and it has turned into an anticipated quote at the end of the week.
It goes" Ms. Johnson, we finally made it to Friday! We didn't think we would but we did!"
Guess Ms. Johnson needs to be more careful about what she is saying each day because these little sayings and phrases sure do stick to their memories!
It was a true and felt sentiment this past Friday! The kids were tired and so were their teachers! But we pushed through, got A LOT of work done and settled back into our routine with our old and new friends!
In Speech, we worked on identifying good and bad behaviors. We started the week out with a visual sort but took it one step farther by acting out the pictures in small groups. On Friday, the kiddos had a ball looking at the pictures of themselves acting out the good and bad behaviors! This was also a great way to review our expectations and rules in 008!
In Math, we dived into our Touch Math packets- adding four and started an introductory lesson to money. For Social Studies, we wrapped our community helper unit with a test on Friday! We are hoping to complete many small community trips these next two weeks to really connect their understanding of community helpers! In Science, we started a penguin unit! We will be working on throughout the month of January learning the basics about what penguins are, can do and characteristics they have! And lastly, in Writing, we spent a majority of the week working on our Holiday Break posters which we will be presenting tomorrow in class! Thank you to all the parents who sent in pictures and filled out the homework packets! They came out great and the students are very excited to share!
Overall, we had a busy but productive week! We have a lot coming up this week too!
Some Dates to Remember:
As always we need to say THANK YOU to the wonderful people that work so hard to make 008 a beautiful place to be!
I hope you all have a wonderful week! If you have any questions please feel free to email me at any time! firstname.lastname@example.org
PS- I am currently clearing my phone for Friday- I have no space left for pictures so get ready to see some next weekend :)

I know I have fully taken advantage of not having to set an alarm-just ask Mr. Rich! Hopefully the kiddos have too but something tells me they were up bright and early ready to play!😊
Although I am sad to miss out on the few extra hours of sleep I’ve been getting I am so excited and eager to see those kiddos! I’ve thought about everyone at least once or twice this break, wondering what they’ve been up to,hoping they are being good listened for their families! Which leads me to my first REMINDER!

Hello family and friends of 008! Long time no talk!
I can keep apologizing for my lack of communication or I can tell you that in the New Year I PROMISE I will send out my weekly email updates instead of posting once or twice every couple months on here! :) I find it easier for me, but if you disagree let me know :)
Although my communication has been below average, I can tell you one thing that is definitely ABOVE AVERAGE and that is YOUR KIDDOS! We are so happy and amazed at how much progress they are making since the beginning of the year. They are rocking and rolling with the routine and man do they make it look easy! All of our kiddos are writing, speaking and socializing with each other more than we could have hoped! And it is only DECEMBER!
We have been very busy plugging away with out academics so let me give you a brief recap...
Reading- We read Pete the Cat books during November, still focusing on main character, setting, details and sequencing. For the month of December we have focused on more wintry/holiday themed books. We have read books about toys, snowmen and (next week) gingerbread men! We are still focusing on the comprehension questions but also taking it further by comparing and contrasting and visually sequencing our books.
Math- We are chugging along with out Touch Math curriculum. We have been working on math packets in small groups and whole class. Students are becoming well versed in the math signs (plus, minus), reading mathematical equations and solving simple addition problems. I will be sending home these packets over the holiday break so you can take a look at the work they have been doing and practice it at home if you so choose!
Science- In November we started working on food groups and boy oh boy have we been working hard. It has been hard to sort our foods into the different groups. We are finally starting to get the hang of it so please if you can review this over break! We will continue with this unit after break not only as a refresher but to lead into healthy vs unhealthy foods. This was really hard for the students to grasp last year so we tried to target it in a different way this year presenting the food groups first then identifying them as healthy or unhealthy! Fingers crossed our hard work will pay off!
Social Studies- We took a break from our school community members to venture out onto all community members. We have reviewed about 9 and will be making our way to 15 next week. Our hopes is that students will be able to identify the community members and their roles in the community when we return from break. I'm also hoping to plan some field trips to some of these places when we return so they can see the community members in their own space! (So far we have reviewed: police officer, firefighter, mail carrier, doctor, dentist, sanitation worker, sales clerk, waiter/waitress and teacher!)
Along with our academics, we are continuing to work on personal hygiene every morning and socialization/appropriate behaviors throughout the day. I just want to give the kiddos a HUGE shout out for doing an AMAZING job with both! They have such a strong sense of classroom community and seeing their friendships every day is truly a treat for us! They are LOVING life with their peer buddies (as evident by the school dance photos I will hopefully figure out how to post today)!
We are truly blessed and so grateful to be working with your kiddos! Their unique personalities and silliness make each day fun, funny and exciting!
Big Thank YOU to our AMAZING STAFF in 008! Ms. Jordan, Mr. Loza, Mr. David and Ms. Scott you all are so WONDERFUL! The kids have made so much progress because of you and we are so lucky to have you in our classroom.
THANK YOU to all the parents that made it to the parent teacher conferences in November! I LOVE getting to see you, talk about your babies and tell you about their wonderful progress! I wish we could have this every other month so we could see each other more frequently! As always you are all welcome to stop by whenever to see what we are working on and say hello!
THANK you to all the clinicians that work so hard each week to provide us with lessons and services! Ms. Tanya, we LOVE your Word of the Week activities! We don't know what we'd do without them!
Ms. Elizabeth, Ms. Mary, Ms. Emily and Ms. Christine, Thank you for all the one-on-one work you do with our students that are helping them make progress and navigate our day to day routines! They are so lucky to have you!
And last but not least, THANK YOU students of 008! It has been a difficult year health wise for me but you all are so understanding and loving! I LOVE coming to work each day to see you! Hopefully, Ms. Johnson can rest up over break so she isn't so cranky and tired all the time:) Thank you for making us laugh, working hard and showing us your amazing abilities! We are so lucky to be your teachers this school year!
Next Thursday afternoon- Menni & Nina's Birthday Party- parents welcome to bring in a treat (please arrange with Ms. Johnson if you are doing so)
Friday- HOLIDAY party! Family and friends of 008 are welcome to join us in a holiday party from 1:45 to 2:45! We will be doing some holiday craftivities, making some yummy treats and watching a holiday film!
Basketball skills- TOMORROW at 8:45! Please wear Gym Shoes!
Thanks again for your patience with me and I promise my new years resolution will come to light! :)
I have been meaning to ask you all to please fill out the CPS volunteer form via this link! We need this in order for you to come in and "volunteer" in the classroom and attend our field trips! I'm hoping that we will be taking some more come the new year and could really use some of your help on these! We need this form completed and approved before you come along! :)
Have a wonderful Thursday and we will talk soon!
Hello family and friends of 008! Welcome back!
I apologize in my delay! As mentioned before, I have been dealing with some health issues this year making my communication more scarce! But I promise I am always bursting to tell you what is going on in 008! If you ever have any questions or concerns, please do not hesitate to email me or contact me to set up a time where we can meet. We have had a wonderful time diving into our fall topics!
What's Been Happening in 008:
In Science, we have been studying apples, farm animals and now this week PUMPKINS! We are preparing for our trip to the Pumpkin Patch/Farm on October 29th. Students had a blast identifying the parts of the apple and using a real apple to identify and label each part, I hope they showed you the apple diagrams we made in class! By the way, did you know that your kiddos are the ONLY students I have ever worked with that WANT to do work and TAKE home EVERYTHING!?! Every day I hear Ms. Johnson can we take this home? Are you going to keep it? :)
I love that they are so proud of their work and want to show them to you! I hope they do!
As far as other subjects go, we have been chugging away at reading comprehension using short stories related to our themes! We have read the Ants Go Home and The Lost Little Duckling the last several weeks. We are still working on The Lost Little Duckling so if you want to ask your kiddo about the duckling ask them whom they are trying to find (hint- it's the duckling's mother)! We are using these short stories to work on text tracking, sight word recognition, and comprehension questions such as main idea, main character, setting and three details. I usually keep their reading work in a portfolio but will show you their work in November at Parent Teacher Conferences!
For Math, we are very fortunate to have new materials purchased for us this year so we are officially diving into all things Touch Math! We are still reviewing and going over the basics but students are catching on real fast and loving the new manipulatives and worksheets! In Social Studies we are continuing to identify our school community members- our classmates, our teachers in 008 and our enrichment teachers! We are now making our way to identify other members around the school. Students are loving this review and are doing a great job learning their names and community roles!
Well, that pretty much covers it academically! Socially, we have had a lot going on as well! Our peer buddies and best buddies had their first meet and greet this month and MAN O MAN was it stinking cute! I have to say that one of my favorite things about Coonley is this program. Seeing the general education students so involved and wanting to be friends with our kiddos is BEAUTIFUL! We are so lucky to have this program and to have such caring, empathetic students in our school! Let me tell you it was not an easy task picking peer buddies out of the pile of students that applied! Along with the meet and greet, Peer Buddies and Best Buddies have been helping students transition to their specials and helped us participate/run in the Walkathon last Friday! Despite the cold temperatures, our kiddos loved being with their buddies running/walking around the school!
This week we have a lot to celebrate with Mr. David's Birthday tomorrow (Tuesday the 16th) and Mr. Max's birthday on Thursday! For those of you that are new to 008, we make quite the deal of birthdays in our room so we are very excited to celebrate these two wonderful guys!
Hope you have a wonderful Monday! I promise I will try to get my wonderful photos of your students uploaded on the website shortly! I'm still getting used to the new formatting.
Hello family and friends of 008!
Well this took me awhile! :) ( A month to be exact!) I am sorry for the delay but I wanted to have everything posted to the website now for easy access! I have SO MUCH to share from the first few weeks of school!
First off, WELCOME BACK! We have a little more than half of our class from last year returning and man are we so lucky! They have been a big help for those who are new and moved up in learning the rules and routines of 008. We are so impressed with our kiddos and how much they retained over the summer. We are also very appreciative of those parents that continued to work on academic skills throughout the summer! It was not in vain and we can totally tell the difference!
In addition to new classmates, we welcome in our new paraprofessionals, Mr. Diego Loza and Ms. Jordan Dombrowski. They have been a WONDERFUL addition to our already phenomenal staff! Can't forget our AMAZING returning staff Ms. Jasmine Scott and Mr. David Walls! We are so lucky to FULLY staffed by week 3 and to have such wonderful professionals working with our kiddos!
The kids came in eager to see their friends and teachers, ready for recess and some even came excited for work! The first couple weeks was us trying to get back into the swing of things, adapt to our new times and dive back into academics. But do not worry, we are FINALLY getting there! It seems like the new tasks are taking less time and we are flying though our days. As mentioned in notes sent home, we have a later lunch this year with the kids not eating until almost 1! (yikes!) Hence, breakfast and snack time are necessary to get us through the morning and our day! Thank you to all the parents and staff who have donated snacks to the classroom! We can always use snacks in the classroom so if you are feeling generous and would like to send in a bag of pretzels or box of goldfish you are always welcome! :)
Some new changes to our daily routine:
On the website you will see that we are working on a monthly unit each month. It will be posted the beginning of the month so you are aware of what we are studying in class! For general questions about our year-long curriculum & studies please check out that tab! :)
Thank you for your patience with emails and this website! I have been dying to tell you how AMAZING your children are and how absolutely LUCKY I am to be their teacher this year. I am so excited for a year of hard work, progress and FUN! If you ever have any questions feel free to contact me or set up a time to meet before/after school! Have a wonderful weekend!
